What is an FTP program?

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is the way two computers "talk" to each other in order to exchange files. FTP is universally accepted. It does not matter what kind of machine you are on, as long as you have software that speaks the FTP language. There are a large variety of software packages for all computer platforms that will help you to transfer your files. Both Windows and Mac versions of FTP softwares are available.

Recommended FTP programs

We recommend CuteFTP at
http://www.globalscape.com or WSFTP at http://www.ipswitch.com.

Using FTP to upload files

1. Open up your ftp program, if it does not open a connection window when you open it, click the button somewhere on the page that says "Connect".

2. Fill out the needed information. Host or Server Name should be set to your FTP server (ftp.yourdomain.com). User Login Name will be youdomain.com (without www prefix), your password is the one sent you via email after your registration.

3. Press connect and you should see lines print on the bottom of the FTP Window. You will know that you are connected when you see the Transfer complete.

4. When you first log into the server, you will be located in your user directory. This is your root directory. You should upload all of your files (including images, html files, scripts etc.) into /WEB directory. Other directories under your root directory will NOT be accessible from Internet, only your scripts can access them.

5. To upload files onto the server, drag and drop files from your desktop to the directories on the server (Located on the right side of the screen). Or, select the files on the left (your hard drive side) and click the upload button of your software.

ASCII and Binary modes

There are two different ways to upload files to the server: ASCII and Binary Mode. Both are used for different types of files. ASCII is used only for text files, mostly HTML and Perl scipts. Binary is used to upload images and multimedia. Switching the settings for different uploads (Such as uploading an image in ASCII mode) will destroy that file on the server, which will result in it not showing correctly. The majority of FTP programs have a built in switch that will upload in the correct setting, so you do not have to think about it.
